Bradley’s goals help USA blank Mexico in World Cup qualifier

COLUMBUS, Ohio — With his hair cut shorter these days, 21-year-old Michael Bradley looks more like his father, U.S. men’s national team coach Bob Bradley, than he did as a teenager. Wednesday night, he did what his father and coach asked. He and Sacha Kljestan, the USA’s central midfield tandem, disrupted the Mexican attack. And Michael Bradley did much more. Near the end of each half, he found himself with an opportunity and converted. Just as in 2001 and 2005, archrival Mexico left Columbus with a 2-0 defeat.

Bradley first played for his father at age 16 with the MetroStars, now called the New York Red Bulls. After moving to Dutch club Heerenveen, he debuted for the national team in 2006 under Bruce Arena. When Bob Bradley replaced Arena, Michael was once again the coach’s son. In Holland, he scored 21 goals over the 2007-08 season, but with Germany’s Borussia Moenchengladbach, he’s still not positioned as a primary scorer. “With Gladbach this year, we’ve had to adjust how we play based on how the other teams play,” Bradley says. “There’s been games where I’ve played deep in the midfield, there’s been games where I’ve played farther forward.”

In the first half Wednesday, DaMarcus Beasley played a corner kick over the massed players in the penalty box. Landon Donovan headed the ball back into the center for Oguchi Onyewu, whose close-range header was well-saved by Oswaldo Sanchez. The ball fell to Bradley’s feet. In an instant, it was in the upper netting. Mexico pressed in the second half, but Bradley and Kljestan helped the U.S. defense limit chances. After Mexico’s best chance — a ball that hit Giovani dos Santos’ foot just inches from the goal but didn’t go in — captain Rafael Marquez rashly charged into goalkeeper Tim Howard. He was ejected, reducing Mexico to 10 players.

In stoppage time, Jozy Altidore played the ball down the wing to Donovan. Altidore was clobbered as he made the pass, but the referee allowed play to continue with the USA attacking. Donovan drew the defense and centered to Bradley, who was trailing the play. He fired the ball past the diving Sanchez. Bradley and Kljestan, teammates on last year’s Olympic team, have accounted for all five U.S. goals this year. “It’s not too common that the two deep-lying midfielders are going to be the two leading goal scorers on the team,” Kljestan said. “I’m sure Landon (Donovan), Clint (Dempsey), (DaMarcus) Beasley and Brian Ching are going to be the leaders as we move forward this year.”

In an interview tent that rattled in the wind after the game, Bob Bradley broke from father and son’s usual stoicism to allow himself a little smile when a reporter asked Michael if he would now replace Donovan as the villain in the eyes of Mexican fans. But asked how he felt about his son, the coach demurred.

“Right now, I’m the coach,” Bradley said. “It’s about the team. “I have three children. I’m proud of all my kids. I have a great family, and I’m a lucky man.”

The game was the first of 10 in the “hexagonal,” a six-team round-robin from which three teams will qualify for the World Cup and a fourth will go to a playoff.

El viernes por la tarde decidí que tenia que apoyar a la selección mexicana aun después de andar medio mal, o mejor dicho re-mal, jugaria en Houston el domingo, hoy domingo. Fui a comprar los boletos online y descubrí que se habían terminado todos, ya estaban vendidos. Pero afortunadamente encontré que tenían todavía boletos del nivel 800, que son los VIP, en los palcos de lujo, no podía creer mi suerte, estaban por debajo, muy por debajo del precio normal, así que inmediatamente los compre.

Se llego el domingo y era un día terrible, llueve y llueve y no se esperaba que mejorasen las condiciones por el resto del día, afortunadamente el Estadio Reliant tiene techo movible, así que supuse no lo abrirían y el juego podría igual disfrutarse como si nada.

Ahora debo confesar que yo nunca había estado en los palcos VIP, si había ido al Estadio Reliant antes, pero nunca a un juego de Soccer. Quiero decirles que verdaderamente me sentía millonario estando ahí, todo de lujo. Lo único Malo es que como estos lugares son para gente muy pero muy importante, como el presidente Bush, que ahí ha estado, pues esta muy alejado de la raza, por lo que no es el mismo ambiente, acá es de puros ricachones apretados, así que por ese lado no me gusto, no creo vuelva a comprar en esta sección a menos que no me quede mas remedio, pero si la vista es verdaderamente espectacular, tienes visibilidad a cualquier rincón del estadio.

El evento inicio, se cantaron los himnos, y se tomaron las fotografías correspondiente, el partido comenzó y así la emoción, es verdaderamente otra experiencia, el ruido, sobretodo, eso el tremendo ruido y mentadas de madre que se avientan todos. Las criticas a jugadores y al arbitro. La famosa ola es sencillamente genial. Cartelones, en fin todo.

La vista es genial, pues uno esta acostumbrado a poder ver solo lo que la TV decide que puedes ver, acá puedes ver al publico, a los camarógrafos, a los reporteros, a los letreros, a las pantallas, a los árbitros asistentes, a la banca y entrenadores de ambos equipos, a los que calientan, a los que no traen el balón y se están diciendo dimes y diretes, en fin todo.

Se siente una sensación excelente poder estar viendo a tus ídolos, y por que no a tus mini héroes en ese momento, C. Blanco, J.Borgetti, en fin a todos. Verlos y reconocerlos en la cancha. Hay uno que es el que lleva el numero 7, que me gusto mucho como se mueve en la cancha, como juega y pelea los balones.

Es increíble como el publico ovaciona a C.Blanco, es verdaderamente querido, ¿Cómo se ha de sentir uno cuando el publico le ovaciona así?, desde que lo pusieron a calentar y en el momento que anunciaron su entrada, todo mundo se levanto y empezó a ovacionar, y cada jugada que hacia, toque de balón, el apoyo del publico hacia el es simplemente genial. Ahora también cabe decir, que si es un excelente jugador, al meterlo se sintió inmediatamente en la cancha, es como que lo veía por todos lados, corre y corre; pelea y pelea, y ¡no solo el balón!. Es un gran jugador. Aquí lo demostró para mi.

El momento del tan esperado GOL, llevo y fue sensacional la algarabía, todo mundo estábamos gritando y cantando el GOL, es una experiencia única, no me puedo imaginar como se sentirá estar en una final de la copa mundial; y mas si es MEXICO.

Veredicto Final: 10. Genial experiencia y obviamente la recomiendo.
